President and managing director, CHU de Québec
Gertrude Bourdon is the president and managing director of CHU de Québec – Université Laval, the largest university hospital centre in the province. A nurse by training, Ms. Bourdon is a graduate of Université Laval and ENAP’s public management program and has in-depth knowledge regarding the organization of specialized and ultraspecialized services within the health care system.
Known for her vision, strategy, and leadership, she was tasked with managing Québec’s emergency services coordination centre (Centre de coordination nationale des urgences) by Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux in 2005. In the years that followed, she held positions as head of nursing and then deputy managing director of clinical organization at Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec (CHUQ). In 2009, she was appointed managing director of CHUQ and vice president of Université Laval’s integrated health network committee (Table du RUIS). In 2012 she led the voluntary merger of CHUQ with Centre hospitalier affilié universitaire de Québec (CHA) and now manages CHU de Québec – Université Laval.
Her tenure on the board of CHUQ and CHU de Québec – Université Laval has coincided with a series of important distinctions, with prestigious organizations such as Accreditation Canada, the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement, and Association québécoise d’établissements de santé et de services sociaux recognizing the institution’s excellence on several occasions.
In addition to regular speaking engagements, Ms. Bourdon is active on the boards of several organizations, including: Société québécoise des infrastructures, Opération Enfant Soleil, Réseau mère-enfant de la Francophonie, Orchestre symphonique de Québec, and Fondation du CHU de Québec. She is also actively involved in several charitable causes.
Her leadership and career have been lauded by several organizations. In 2014, she was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network, as well as a YWCA Woman of Distinction in the Public Service category. She also received the jury prize from CHU de Québec’s board of nurses in May 2014 and was named a Woman of Influence by the newspaper Le Soleil in March 2013.
